The filter operates as a dual method filter, removing solid matter by both mechanical retention and surface absorption.

The filter bed is made of 4 layers of inert natural media that have an increasing density, a decreasing particle size and specific shape factor.

As the media has a naturally high ‘Zeta Potential’ negatively charged micro-organisms such as cryptosporidium and legionella are initially removed by the highly effective mechanical filtration layers and then supported by the surface absorptive layer.

The filter is cleaned by way of its unique self leveling, low volume backwashing system that uses 0.5 – 1.0% of the forward flow for 15 minutes.

The filter deals with contaminate concentrations of up to 500mg/lire – filter to less than 0.5NTU (officially classified as “ultra clear”).

Mechanical & absorptive retention

The Spruce Filter has considerable advantages over competitive products:

• Has a unique self layering filtering media that does not need to be changed, removes the cost of renewable filter elements; there is no costly down time for removing clogged filter media, as can happen with sand filtration.
• Provides a portable unit for immediate safe drinking water in disaster areas which can be manually operated in extreme conditions.
• Represents a particle removal efficiency of better than 99.954%, removing pathogens down to 0.2 microns
• Can maintain stable commercial output of up to 180,000 litres per hour, and 5 times faster than Rapid Sand and with improved operational safety with pressures at 5-6 psig
• Can filter waste, river or contaminated water to a standard suitable for reuse
• Successfully operate throughout the pH range from 3 to 12
• Faster more efficient low volume backwash operation
